to elaborate on my previous post:

i have followed the same steps you put with an avi movie and copied the resulting divx movie file to cd and now is running on my dvd player with Arabic subtitles! it works perfectly.

in case you wonder, my dvd recorder / player is LG RH298H.  it is only marked as DIVX (not DIVX ultra) but still this model works fine.

re-encoding with subtitles used to take few hours on my old PC but with your solution it took a couple of minutes.

 just download http://www.videohelp.com/tools/AVIAddXSubs and easy to use

 and there are anther way but not too good like your way 

*  download Txt2VobSub and convert srt to  idx
